The PEER Group Inc., (Kitchener, Ontario) announces new Windows® XP functionality for PEER® Event Service (PES). In addition to providing the benefits of a loosely coupled distribution mechanism, PES now offers developers the ability to scale communication services efficiently to thousands of subscribers.
PEER Event Service provides all the communication handling capability and flexibility to support any application with the primary purpose of moving data to one or more subscribers. In one application, PES reduced communication overhead by offering local- and server-level distributors. In another application, PES was modified in a unique way to actually reduce its powerful anonymity design and efficiently accommodate the customer's need for information from specific publishers.
With the advent of Windows XP, PES now provides multi-cast capability to provide more efficient service to a larger number of subscribers. At the same time, it offers the full Publish/Subscribe benefits in situations involving a limited number of destinations.
PEER Event Service evolved with the company's need to maintain a high level of communications infrastructure in the manufacturing applications being developed. During the late 90s - as PEER Group customers migrated from a UNIX environment to the increasingly popular Windows environment - the goal was to develop a Publish/Subscribe mechanism that provided the flexibility and scalability to sustain software solutions in the manufacturing environment.
PEER Group's customers' shop floors are characterized by hundreds of pieces of equipment in various states of operation. The dynamic nature of these businesses also dictates the addition of new processes to the shop floors. Any software application operating on the shop floor must continue to function regardless of equipment states and must accommodate the addition of new processes without overhauling the application's core. Without this capability, literal chaos would result if a single piece of equipment going down caused the entire floor to grind to a halt.
Mike Kropp, VP of Engineering, commented, "In the manufacturing solution we develop, what the customer sees is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of effort. We invest a large portion of our income into R&D to produce tools such as PES that we, and others, use to ensure the software is supported by the best infrastructure possible."
PEER Group provides leading-edge factory automation software solutions and consulting services to advanced manufacturers and OEMs in the semiconductor, electronics, life sciences and automotive industries.
