Tell me more: New functionality coming in EDA Freeze 3

As semiconductor fabs increase adoption of Smart Manufacturing platforms and capabilities, equipment users and suppliers need to adapt to new requirements for collecting and sharing high volumes of data at very high speeds. To meet these challenges, the SEMI EDA / Interface A standards are being updated to integrate HTTP/2 with gRPC and Protocol Buffers technology for significant performance and functional benefits, as well as new features, to ensure the next EDA Freeze (Freeze 3) is ready to handle the industry’s growing appetite for data.

Freeze 3 will also include new functionality to better support customer use case scenarios, such as:

  • Better definitions of the Client Session (which looks after management functions) and Consumer Session (which gets data from the equipment). This helps support different deployment scenarios (traditional EDA applications that support both Client Session and Consumer Session in the software application, and separate, dedicated Client Session and Consumer Session software applications that could be running on different machines.)
  • Better security and authentication capabilities when additional security layers are desired, using SSL/TLS certificates, SHA-256 hashing and ACL passwords when establishing a session.
  • By caching data collected at higher frequency at the equipment, the Equipment Server can report it to Consumer Sessions using highly efficient arrays. (Performance testing demonstrated that 1 parameter with an array of 1000 float elements is more efficient to process and transmit compared to 1000 parameters of float values.)
  • Adding new operations to query objects from the Equipment Server so current attribute values can be included in data collection plan reports (in a similar manner to SEMI E30 and E39 for those familiar with SECS/GEM methodology).

The DDA Task Force continues to work on Standards update in preparation for Freeze 3 and are always looking for interested people to participate in standards development.
